Sumus Balt Projects

Delivering well-built, well-managed commercial and industrial projects.

This is a design concept prepared by Matthew Link for Sumus Balt Projects Ltd. It is not the live website.

A-01 · The idea

The drawing stays on the job.

The partnership says it takes a project from drawings to completion, and then supports it once people move in. The brand takes that literally. The drawing is a working document, and it stays on site after turnover.

Every page in the system works like a sheet, with a hairline grid, dimension ticks and a stake in the ground. Photographs show the real work and the type stays plain. There is one accent colour, the last light on the prairie, and it is used sparingly.

A-02 · Logo

Use the published mark. Don't redraw it.

The master logo is the PNG on the live site. On light grounds it runs as published. On Night it is inverted. Nothing else changes.

Clear space

Keep a margin equal to the height of BALT PROJECTS on every side. Nothing enters the dashed box above.

Minimum size

140 px wide on screen. 32 mm wide in print.

Below minimum

Set the name in Montserrat 700 instead: Sumus Balt Projects

Misuse

  • Don't stretch

  • Don't recolour

  • Don't rotate

  • Don't set on busy photography

Screen redraw To confirm

A Montserrat redraw for places where a raster file won't do, such as motion and large-format screen. It follows the published lockup: SUMUS light and BALT bold on the first line, PROJECTS below, with the stem of the T in BALT dropping between the C and the S. It is a screen redraw, to confirm against the master vector before anyone uses it. There is no monogram.

A-03 · Colour

Night site, prairie light.

A-05 · Graphic device

The stake.

One vertical datum taken from the T in BALT. In the logo its stem drops between the C and the S of PROJECTS. As a device it carries on below the baseline and tapers to a point, the way a survey stake goes into the ground. Around it sit a hairline construction grid and extension ticks.

Construction diagram: the stake is the stem of the T in BALT, running down between the C and the S of PROJECTS, past the baseline, to a tapered point. SUMUSBALT PROJEC S BASELINE STEM FROM THE T TAPER TO POINT
Derivation · the stem is measured from the T, the point lands on the grid

Do

  • Use one stake per section, as its marker: a chapter head, the hero progress rail, or a hoarding edge.
  • Keep it in Last Light on dark grounds, Night on light ones.
  • Let it grow as a section is revealed.

Don't

  • Repeat it as a pattern or border.
  • Turn it into a monogram or an icon set.
  • Rotate it, fill it with photography, or pair it with a second accent.

A-06 · Imagery

Their photographs, barely graded.

Only the company's own photography. Crop to the building and the work. Keep the crane in frame when the point is that the site is live. A light grade only: no duotone, no blue night grade, no heavy grain.

Building envelope going on at sunrise, with a crane still in the yard.
Without the rule · type would sit on raw sky

Panels on. Openings cut.

With the rule · Night gradient at about 70%, type in Drawing

Structure · no project name
Warehouse interior with the floor marked out under the roof structure.
Interior · no tenant name
Exterior of a brick commercial building with a mural, glazed entry, and signage reading The Arcade and Arcadium.
Arcadium · named because the site names it

Filenames are not titles. A photo gets a project name only when the live site captions it with one. Short cards are cropped low, centred at 72% of the height, so they show the building and not the sky.

A-07 · Voice

A builder talking, not a brochure.

Short, plain sentences in Canadian spelling. Say what gets built and who stands behind it. If a fact isn't published, tag it and ask.

  • Write

We take pride in standing behind our work, long after the site fencing comes down.

    Avoid

Alberta's premier award-winning construction partner, trusted by hundreds.

  • Write

    Avoid

    End-to-end, best-in-class project delivery solutions.

  • Write

    Avoid

  • Write

    Area To confirm

    Avoid

Area: 48,000 sq ft (a plausible guess)

Spelling

Canadian: colour, centre, metre.

Punctuation

Full stops and commas. No long dashes.

Numbers

Only the ones they publish. No invented stats.

A-08 · Motion

The drawing completes. The page does not perform.

Motion should feel like a set of drawings being issued: precise and quiet. Animate transform, opacity, clip-path, and stroke only. With reduced motion turned on, everything shows complete and still.

  • Linework draws

stroke-dashoffset 1 to 0 · scrubbed to scroll in the hero

  • Rise and fade

    16 px, 500 ms, power2.out, 60 ms stagger

  • Image wipe

clip-path inset, left to right, 800 ms · never a zoom

  • Sheet L-01

    Ticks and the stake extend

scaleX or scaleY from the datum, 600 ms

Haptics

8 to 15 ms pulses on Enter, menu, stage change, filter, wizard step, and submit. Never on scroll. Off with reduced motion.

Pinning

Only the hero and the lifecycle sheet pin, and only on a large screen with a fine pointer.

Never

Bounce, custom cursors, or scroll-jacking outside the two pinned sheets.
